Can you give me any examples of specific shades from manufacturers? (preferably not expensive brands!)When selecting red lipstick the advice for my skintone is to pick a blue based red...what does that mean?!?
This image is a perfect example of a blue-based red:

A quick way to know whether a lipstick is blue-based or not is to smile. If your teeth appear whiter, then the lipstick is blue-based. If your teeth don't seem whiter, then it may be more of an orange base.
MAC's ';Russian Red'; is a blue based red, but it is $14. Loreal's ';British Red'; is another blue based red, and is only $7.When selecting red lipstick the advice for my skintone is to pick a blue based red...what does that mean?!?
truely I have no idea what they mean when they say ';blue based'; but here are some colors of lipsticks(not all red, but they are for you skin tone)
Fair-skinned women would look great with lips touched with pinks, peaches and mauves.
Lipsticks with gold, pink with a touch of gold, peach and light to medium brown best complement olive-skinned women.
Dark-skinned women should go for lipsticks shaded bronze, medium browns, brick browns, berries and burgundy.
Blue based simply means a ';cool'; blue with blue or violet undertones. This would be a ';true';, stoplight red.
Warm reds are those with golden undertones. Those that are a real tomato red or even orangey looking.
For a good blue based red, look at this cosmetics company http://www.besamecosmetics.com/home/?pag鈥?/a>
and their lipstick entitled ';Besame Red';. Compare that to ';Red Hot Red'; and ';Carmine'; and you should see the difference. You could also look at this list of reds and what type they are: http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=h鈥?/a>
Blue-based means that it has blue undertones to it, so if you had to compare that particular shade of red it'd be closer to a purple color than orange. If you're more cool toned, a blue based red would be good for you and if you're warm toned then the more orange-y red would be best. Good luck!
Its just a fancy way of saying to go for a deep red/mauve. Not to go for the bright orange based ones.
